The city of Ely is rich in history, charm and beauty and the jewel in the crown of the Fens, and known as the 2nd smallest city in England. Formerly an island and surrounded by dramatic lowland fens, the city rises into the big wide-open skies. Dominating the skyline is one of the England's most beautiful and largest Cathedrals. This medieval cathedral is known locally as the 'Ship of the Fens' and is famous for its unique Octagon tower, which when lit can be seen for tens of miles.
Ely's most famous resident and former MP, Oliver Cromwell, lived in Ely for many years before becoming Lord Protector of England. His home is open to the public throughout the year. Wander through this lovely city, having lunch on your way!
