This shrewd and enormously enjoyable retelling of the Wizard of Oz story from the witches' point of view works because it has a story that adults can take seriously. When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the west, created 'one of the great heroines of fantasy literature' explaining how a misunderstood, green girl named Elphaba became 'wicked' but her unlikely friend, Glinda, became 'good'.
