Itinerary

Friday
We depart and enjoy our journey west to the Mickleover Court Hotel, taking the opportunity to spend some time in the City of Derby en route.

Saturday
Our first destination today is the colourful market town of Ashbourne. The main place of interest in Ashbourne apart from the quaint market is perhaps Church Street, with its fine Georgian houses, old grammar school, almshouses and St Oswald's Church. Following lunch (not included) we visit Kedlestone Hall which features a spendid Marble Hall with rows of 25ft high pink alabaster columns surrounding the room. The state rooms contain much magnificent furniture and paintings, some of which were brought back from India by George Curzon. The gardens have been restored in part to an 18th-century 'pleasure ground' and the surrounding park includes a fine bridge, fishing pavilion and a series of lakes and cascades.

Sunday (M)
Today we set off to explore the Amber Valley. Our first port of call is Heage Windmill. Built in 1797 and restored in 2002, Heage Windmill, a Grade II listed building, is the only working, stone-towered, multi-sailed windmill in England. The windmill’s location in the Derbyshire countryside provides spectacular views towards the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Shop, toilets and the ground floor of the mill are all within easy reach. (Please Note: Ladder type stairs to the top two floors of the mill). From here we travel the eight miles to enjoy some time at Denby Pottery but not before taking the opportunity to make a short stop at the unique Belper River Gardens which are situated at a point where the River Derwent is at its widest and most tranquil. (M)

Monday
After checking out of the hotel we travel to Wollaton Hall, Gardens & Deer Park. This spectacular Grade I Listed Elizabethan mansion in the heart of Nottingham has just undergone a major programme of restoration. Here we enjoy free time before continuing on our homeward journey after what has been a most enjoyable visit to one of our country’s hidden secrets, the Amber Valley.
